Former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys has slammed Jamie Carragher on social media over his comments regarding Mohamed Salah and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Richard Keys Slams Jamie Carragher Over “Ignorant” Mo Salah Comments Amid Ballon d’Or Debate

Liverpool bolstered their 2024/25 Premier League title push with a commanding victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, with Mohamed Salah stealing the spotlight. The Egyptian forward opened the scoring and set up Dominik Szoboszlai for Liverpool’s second goal before halftime.

Following the match, pundits debated Salah’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or, but Jamie Carragher sparked controversy by suggesting that his AFCON participation hurt his chances. The ex-Liverpool defender argued that Salah would always be at a disadvantage compared to other top players since Egypt is unlikely to win a major international tournament.

Carragher’s remarks drew swift backlash from Micah Richards and Daniel Sturridge—and now, Richard Keys has joined the criticism.

“Never mind the Premier League’s best ever—Mo Salah might just be Liverpool’s best ever—despite never having played in a big tournament. Seriously. What ignorance. Unforgivable ignorance,” Keys wrote in his blog, clearly taking aim at Carragher without naming him directly.

Keys went further, accusing some UK-based pundits of having a narrow-minded view of football beyond their own borders. He cited the widespread criticism of the 2022 Qatar World Cup as an example, calling it “the best ever” despite skepticism from many in England.

He also highlighted Egypt’s dominance in AFCON, pointing out their record seven titles and Salah’s ongoing opportunity to win the tournament.

Carragher has not responded directly but shared a fan’s post defending his argument, stating that AFCON does not hold the same prestige as the World Cup, Euros, or Copa América.
