Mathys Tel Disappoints, Johnson Dazzles (8/10) – Tottenham Player Ratings vs Ipswich

Mathys Tel Struggles, Johnson Shines (8/10) – Tottenham Player Ratings vs Ipswich

Tottenham secured their third straight Premier League victory with a dominant 4-1 win over Ipswich Town.

Ange Postecoglou took a bold approach by benching James Maddison for the clash at Portman Road on Saturday, February 22.

The Englishman was the hero in Tottenham’s 1-0 Premier League win over Manchester United at home on Sunday, February 16. However, he was left out of the squad for the Ipswich clash—though it hardly mattered, as Brennan Johnson’s brace gave Spurs an early cushion.

Omari Hutchinson pulled one back for the hosts before halftime, and Ipswich pushed for an equalizer in the second half, even having a goal ruled out for offside. But Djed Spence and Dejan Kulusevski sealed the win for Postecoglou’s side.

Tottenham News has rated each player’s performance out of 10.

Tottenham currently sit 12th in the Premier League table with 33 points and a +15 goal difference, edging out Crystal Palace, who have the same points but a -1 GD. Everton follow in 14th with 31 points, while Manchester United sit 15th with 30 points and a -7 GD.

Spence Shines Again for Tottenham vs Ipswich

Guglielmo Vicario – 7
A solid performance from the Spurs goalkeeper. Made some important saves and distributed the ball well under pressure. Couldn’t do much about Hutchinson’s goal but remained composed throughout.

Guglielmo Vicario – 7
Made crucial saves early on as Ipswich started aggressively. Had little chance of stopping Hutchinson’s goal but remained composed throughout. Once again showed why he’s vital to Postecoglou’s setup.

Destiny Udogie – 5
Tried to push forward when possible and wasn’t overly tested defensively. Substituted after an hour as Postecoglou manages his return from a lengthy injury absence.

Archie Gray – 6
Had a tough start against Liam Delap’s physicality but gradually settled into the game and became more composed as it progressed.

Kevin Danso – 7
Much like Gray, he had a shaky start but quickly found his rhythm. Confident on the ball despite a few misplaced passes and remained solid defensively throughout.

Djed Spence – 8
One of Spurs’ standout performers in recent weeks, Spence was defensively solid once again. Showed his attacking threat too, capping off a strong display with his second goal of the season late in the game.

Rodrigo Bentancur – 7
A solid and composed display in midfield, controlling the tempo and contributing defensively and offensively.

Lucas Bergvall – 7
Showed glimpses of his attacking quality and continues to grow in importance under Postecoglou. A promising performance.

Dejan Kulusevski – 6
Struggled to make an impact in the first half and remained fairly quiet after the break. However, he made his mark late on with a superb goal to seal the victory.

Brennan Johnson – 8
Showed his importance to the team with a first-half brace, giving Spurs an early advantage. Faded in the second half and was subbed off just after the hour mark, but his impact was already well established.

Mathys Tel – 3
Barely involved at Portman Road and offered no attacking threat when he did get on the ball. A disappointing display, and if performances like this continue, it’s difficult to see Spurs making his move permanent.

Son Heung-min – 8
Showed glimpses of his best, causing trouble down the left and assisting both of Johnson’s goals to take his Premier League tally to nine assists. Faded in the second half as fatigue set in before being substituted.

Substitutes

James Maddison (On for Johnson, 65′) – 7
Brought fresh energy to the midfield and showcased his trademark footwork, capping off his cameo with a well-timed assist for Spence’s goal.

Pedro Porro (On for Udogie, 65′) – 5
Had little to do after coming on. A quiet but perhaps much-needed outing for the full-back.

Dane Scarlett (On for Tel, 74′) – 6
Showed great bravery, winning a flick-on to assist Kulusevski’s goal while taking a heavy knock from Jacob Greaves in the process.

Wilson Odobert (On for Son, 74′) – 4
Struggled to make an impact after coming on and remained on the fringes of the game.

Yves Bissouma (On for Bergvall, 85′) – N/A
Not enough time on the pitch to make a real impression.
