Tottenham under pressure to greenlight ‘stunning’ £80m Cristian Romero exit as contract saga unfolds
Tottenham pressured to approve ‘shocking’ £80m Cristian Romero sale as contract twist emerges
Tottenham may soon have no choice but to part ways with Cristian Romero.
The 26-year-old’s contract will have just two years remaining this summer, meaning Spurs could be compelled to sell him if he doesn’t agree to fresh terms—rather than risk losing him on a free transfer.
Spurs’ big-money move for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guéhi late in the winter window strongly hinted at a summer exit for Cristian Romero.
However, Tottenham appear determined to keep hold of their star defender.
Tottenham to Offer Mega Contract to Cristian Romero
According to TBR Football (11 February), Spurs are prepared to make Romero the club’s highest-paid player in a bid to secure his future in North London.
Discussions with Cristian Romero are reportedly already in motion, but securing his commitment won’t be straightforward.
The Argentine defender is said to be frustrated with Tottenham’s lack of progress since his arrival, meaning the club will need to do more than just offer a lucrative contract to convince him to stay.
Former Spurs scout Bryan King suggests Tottenham could put a massive £250,000-a-week offer on the table to keep Cristian Romero at the club.
With talks already underway, it remains to be seen whether the Argentine defender will be swayed by the lucrative deal or push for an exit amid concerns over the club’s progress.
However, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham has a different stance. Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he revealed that he would prefer to see the World Cup winner sold this summer rather than committing to a new deal.
“I don’t think we should be offering him that kind of contract,” Wenham told Tottenham News.
“That might sound crazy, given we’re 14th in the Premier League and talking about selling our Argentine World Cup-winning defender. However, he just isn’t available enough.”
“He looks set to miss the majority of this season. So if an opportunity arises in the summer to double the £40 million we spent on him, I would sell Romero,” Wenham added.
Tottenham to Accept £80 Million for Cristian Romero?
Spurs initially paid around £40 million to bring Romero to North London, meaning a potential £80 million offer—especially from a club like Real Madrid—could be too tempting to turn down.
However, with the Argentine struggling for fitness this season, his availability remains a major concern for Tottenham, both in the short and long term.
While there’s no doubt about Romero’s talent, his persistent injury problems could deter clubs from making a big-money bid.
Tottenham may be open to selling, but securing an £80 million offer could prove difficult if concerns over his availability continue to linger.
This could leave Spurs in a tough position, as Romero’s contract continues to run down.
If no club is willing to meet their valuation due to his injury issues, Tottenham may be forced to either lower their asking price or risk losing him for a reduced fee in the future.
