“Ibrahima Konaté Escapes Two Obvious Red Cards as Liverpool Edge Past Wolves”

“Ibrahima Konaté Dodges Two Clear Red Cards as Liverpool Survive Wolves Clash”

After a tough run of games, Liverpool responded strongly in the first half of their Sunday afternoon clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers, heading into the break with a 2-0 lead. Goals from Luis Díaz and Mohamed Salah set the tone for Arne Slot’s side in a controlled opening 45 minutes.

However, the game could have taken a different turn, as Ibrahima Konaté was lucky to avoid being sent off before halftime. The defender received an early yellow card and was involved in a few challenges that could have easily earned him a second.

Instead, he avoided any further punishment and remained on the pitch for the rest of the half.

One notable moment came right after his initial booking when Konaté deliberately kicked the ball away—a move that could have easily resulted in a second yellow card.

According to the rules, delaying play by kicking the ball away after the whistle is a bookable offense, and more often than not, players receive a yellow card for it. However, in a surprising turn of events, Konaté escaped further punishment despite doing just that shortly after being booked for pulling a Wolves player’s shirt.

In the past, incidents like this have resulted in quick dismissals—Gabriel Martinelli, for example, once received two yellow cards in rapid succession for a foul and then kicking the ball away. Given that precedent, the Liverpool defender can count himself fortunate that he wasn’t shown a second yellow on Sunday.

Football fans didn’t hold back their frustration over the incident, taking to social media to call out the apparent leniency. One supporter on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “Should have been a Martinelli double yellow special!” while another echoed the sentiment, posting, “He should have had three yellows by now.” A third fan didn’t mince words, calling the situation “a joke.”

However, that wasn’t the only moment Konaté risked a second yellow and an early exit in the first half.

Konaté Crashed Into Cunha

Later in the half, Konaté put himself in danger again with a reckless challenge on Matheus Cunha. The Liverpool defender clattered into the Wolves forward in what was a clear foul, yet the referee once again chose not to show a second yellow.

Given the circumstances, many felt Konaté was extremely fortunate to stay on the pitch, as similar challenges have often resulted in a dismissal.

Despite his luck in avoiding a red card, Konaté continued to play aggressively and collided heavily with Matheus Cunha just before halftime. Near the edge of Liverpool’s box, the Wolves midfielder headed the ball away moments before Konaté barreled into him, sending him to the ground. The impact caught Cunha’s head, and while the referee awarded a free-kick, he opted not to show another yellow card.

Once again, fans were outraged by the decision. One took to X, writing, “This was shocking. Konaté should have been sent off,” while another went even further, accusing the league of favoritism by posting, “Absolute corruption. The Premier League’s done.”

Given the controversy, it was no surprise that Liverpool substituted Konaté at halftime, preventing any further risk of him receiving a second yellow card.
