“Virgil van Dijk Slammed as ‘Salty’ After Savage Dig at Everton in Post-Match Interview Following Dramatic Late Equaliser”
Virgil van Dijk took a shot at Everton after Liverpool allowed a last-minute equaliser in the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.
Virgil van Dijk has been called “salty” for taking a swipe at Everton after his Liverpool team conceded a dramatic last-minute equaliser in the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.
Liverpool appeared to be on track for a win when Mo Salah scored in the 73rd minute, putting them 2-1 ahead with his 22nd Premier League goal, as Everton seemed to lose momentum.
However, in the dying moments of the match, Everton captain James Tarkowski scored a stunning volley past Alisson Becker, sending the Goodison crowd into an uproar.
A lengthy VAR review followed, checking for a possible offside and a potential foul by Beto on Ibrahima Konate. After the review cleared both concerns, Everton seized the chance to snatch a point in the final moments.
Tempers boiled over at the final whistle when Abdoulaye Doucoure taunted Liverpool’s travelling supporters, prompting Curtis Jones to confront him and shove the former Watford midfielder.
A scuffle broke out between the two teams, leading to both Doucoure and Jones being sent off. The chaos continued as Arne Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff were also shown red cards by referee Michael Oliver for their behavior.
Slot was prohibited from speaking to TNT Sports due to his red card, but captain Virgil van Dijk was allowed to take part in an interview.
The Dutch defender argued that referee Michael Oliver lost control of the match and repeatedly voiced frustration about the goal being scored after “over time.”
Van Dijk also commented on the clash between Doucoure and Jones, adding a dig at Everton by referring to the game as their “cup final.”
“This is their cup final, and they’ll do everything they can to make it difficult for us. It’s a huge boost for them, but a real blow for us,” Van Dijk remarked on Everton’s tactics and celebrations.
"We all know this is their cup final."

A second fan posted: “Loooooollll Van Dijk is so salty. ‘This is their cup final’—he’s not wrong tbf, but man.”
A third user added: “Crikey, some serious salt from Van Dijk in that interview.”

After failing to win their last two matches, Liverpool will aim to bounce back on Sunday when they welcome Wolves to Anfield.
