Arne Slot Criticizes Liverpool Players After Shock FA Cup Exit to Plymouth: ‘We Fell Short’
Liverpool crashed out of the FA Cup fifth round after a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Plymouth Argyle, with Ryan Hardie’s 53rd-minute penalty sealing a historic victory for the Championship’s bottom side.
With a crucial Merseyside derby against Everton on the horizon, Slot made 10 changes to the side that had thrashed Tottenham 4-0 in the Carabao Cup semi-final. However, the heavily rotated squad delivered a lackluster performance, and Slot admitted Plymouth deserved their win.
“It’s a great day for Plymouth,” Slot told ITV Sport. “They had a clear game plan and executed it well. We struggled, and the result speaks for itself. Both teams created few chances, and ultimately, the penalty decided it. It was fairly given, and they earned their victory.”
The Liverpool boss also voiced disappointment in his squad players, admitting their performances did not meet expectations.
“I know these players can do better,” he said. “We expected a higher level, but Plymouth’s approach made it tough to break them down. It’s a painful result for everyone—fans, players, and myself. We wanted to go further, and this is a major setback.”
Despite their struggles, Slot insisted his team fought until the final whistle.
“We battled for 100 minutes, but real chances only came in the last 10-15,” he noted. “It wasn’t about effort—we just lacked creativity.”
Speaking to BBC Sport, Slot rejected the idea that inexperience was to blame, emphasizing that most of the lineup were senior players.
“People always talk about the depth of our squad, and I agree—we have quality. These are the same players who impact games off the bench. Today, though, we simply weren’t good enough.”
