Liverpool’s Unbeaten Streak Ends Amid Controversy as Bergvall’s Late Goal Secures Spurs Victory

Liverpool suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in the Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday night, with Lucas Bergvall scoring a contentious winner in the 86th minute. The result ended Liverpool’s impressive 24-match unbeaten run and marked only their second loss under manager Arne Slot.

Following the match, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk voiced his frustration over a pivotal moment in the game. Speaking to Sky Sports, Van Dijk argued that Bergvall should have received a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Kostas Tsimikas just before scoring his decisive goal.

“It was quite obvious that it was going to be a second yellow,” Van Dijk stated. “It was pretty clear, and then, coincidentally, he scores the winner a minute later. I think Atwell made a mistake, and I told him that. He disagrees, but everyone on the sideline knew it should have been a second yellow. He should have been sent off.”

Van Dijk also criticized the officiating team, including VAR, for failing to intervene. “I’m not saying it cost us the game, but it was a big moment,” he added.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot supported Van Dijk’s stance, calling the decision “clear-cut.” Slot remarked, “No debate—it should have been a second yellow for Bergvall. On Sunday, Spurs had a decision go against them, and today it went in their favor. Unlucky for us.”

Despite the setback, Liverpool will have a chance to overturn the deficit when they host Tottenham at Anfield for the second leg next month.
