“Tottenham Crisis: Rodrigo Bentancur’s Shocking Injury in Liverpool Clash – What’s Next?”
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur was carried off on a stretcher during his team’s Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool on Wednesday night following a difficult fall. The club later issued a statement assuring fans that he remained conscious.
Just under 10 minutes into the Carabao Cup match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Bentancur tried to flick on a right-wing corner but collapsed off the ball without any contact from teammates or opponents. Players from both teams, with Pedro Porro leading the charge, quickly alerted referee Stuart Attwell and the pitch-side medical team. The match was paused so the Uruguayan could receive urgent medical attention.
While lying on the pitch, Bentancur was administered oxygen by the medical team before being helped into a seated position. After a prolonged stoppage, the 27-year-old was stretchered off to a standing ovation from all sides of the North London stadium. Brennan Johnson replaced him in the 15th minute, and the club later provided an update, reassuring fans that Bentancur was conscious, alert, and speaking but would be taken to the hospital for further evaluation.
We can confirm Rodrigo is conscious, talking and will go to hospital for further checks.

During Sky Sports’ coverage of the match, commentator Alan Smith expressed concern, stating, “There’s a lot of concern there. Bentancur went for the diving header; nobody challenged him, I don’t think. I think he just fell awkwardly.”
Tottenham, in their announcement of Bentancur’s substitution for Brennan Johnson via X (formerly Twitter), sent their well wishes to the midfielder, saying, “We’re all with you, Lolo.”
Bentancur, a 67-cap Uruguay international, was making only his third appearance for Tottenham since serving a seven-match suspension. The ban was imposed after he made discriminatory remarks about South Koreans while discussing his teammate, Son Heung-min, over the summer.
