Newcastle United’s goal against Tottenham sparked outrage among fans, as it was allowed to stand despite allegations of a handball during the buildup.
Premier League Clarifies VAR Decision on Newcastle’s Equalizer Against Tottenham
Tottenham initially took the lead through Dominic Solanke’s close-range header, but Newcastle responded quickly as Anthony Gordon slotted past Brandon Austin to equalize.
The goal, however, ignited controversy among Spurs fans, who argued it should have been disallowed due to a suspected handball by Joelinton. The Newcastle midfielder appeared to intercept Lucas Bergvall’s pass with his arm before Bruno Guimarães set up Gordon for the goal.
VAR reviewed the incident but upheld the goal, ruling that Joelinton’s handball was unintentional. According to the decision, his arm was in a natural position and the contact did not directly result in the goal.
The Premier League later issued a statement to clarify:
“The referee’s call of goal was confirmed by VAR, who checked for a potential handball by Joelinton in the build-up and deemed that his arm was by his side, in a natural position, and the contact was accidental.”
Despite the explanation, Spurs fans and pundits were left unconvinced. One user on social media platform X argued, “The attacking handball rule is broken because if Joelinton was the goalscorer, it gets disallowed.” Another questioned, “How is that not handball?”
Former Tottenham player Jamie O’Hara also voiced his frustration, saying, “Wtf it’s handball, how can you give that as a goal? It’s put him in on goal, what a joke.”
