Liverpool’s clash with Leicester saw two prolonged VAR interruptions in the second half, with Curtis Jones’ goal being upheld and Cody Gakpo’s ruled out after thorough reviews.

The Premier League swiftly released two statements addressing the confusion surrounding Liverpool’s second goal and the disallowed third, following lengthy VAR checks. Liverpool, strong favorites for the Boxing Day match, aimed to extend their lead at the top of the table after Chelsea’s home loss to Fulham.

The Reds fell behind early to a Jordan Ayew goal for Leicester in the sixth minute of a foggy Anfield encounter. However, they responded before halftime, with Cody Gakpo’s well-taken strike bringing them level.

After the break, Liverpool took the lead through Curtis Jones’ close-range finish, set up by Alexis Mac Allister. The goal sparked controversy as Mohamed Salah appeared to be offside during the build-up. However, after reviewing the positions of Salah and Virgil van Dijk, the goal was upheld, with Jones clearly onside.

The Premier League clarified the situation in a statement on Twitter/X: “The referee’s call of goal was checked and confirmed by VAR as Salah was onside in the build-up.” This message was also displayed on Anfield’s scoreboard shortly after Jones’ goal.

Further controversy arose when Gakpo’s goal, off a Salah cross, was ruled offside following another lengthy VAR check. The crowd responded with boos, but the decision was upheld as VAR confirmed that Darwin Nunez had been offside in the build-up.

The Premier League explained: “The referee’s call of no goal was checked and confirmed by VAR as Nunez was in an offside position in the build-up.”
