Loris Karius, the former goalkeeper for Liverpool and Newcastle United, has admitted he has considered retirement after a long spell without consistent playing time.
The 31-year-old is primarily remembered for his unfortunate display in the 2018 Champions League final, where costly mistakes allowed goals from Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale, casting a shadow over his career.
After that, Karius had a brief spell at Newcastle under Eddie Howe, but struggled to secure playing time and is now a free agent. In an interview with Sport Bible, Karius revealed that he is contemplating retirement, having spent recent years away from regular football, and is considering exploring other passions he has been preparing for.
Karius Reflects on Retirement and Future
Speaking candidly about his future, Karius said:
“When you’ve been out as long as I have, retirement naturally becomes something you have to think about. I haven’t made a final decision yet because there’s no rush. I’m still fit and capable. But if no opportunities come my way, I’ll have to accept it and focus on other ventures I’m passionate about—things that excite me and deserve my attention. I’ve mentally prepared for this over the last few years, so it wouldn’t be as difficult as some might think.”
Despite his past difficulties, it’s hard to believe there isn’t a club that could benefit from Karius’ experience. However, the specter of his infamous performance with Liverpool seems to continue overshadowing his career.
