Liverpool are reportedly planning for the possibility of life without Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose contract expires next summer. While securing a new deal for the 25-year-old remains their top priority, sources indicate that the Reds are considering backup options in case the England international leaves.
David Ornstein has revealed that Liverpool have made a new contract offer to Trent Alexander-Arnold, but interest from Real Madrid remains a significant concern. The Spanish giants, who are seeking a long-term replacement for the injured Dani Carvajal, reportedly view Alexander-Arnold as a top target.
In response, Liverpool have reportedly turned their attention to Chelsea’s Malo Gusto as a potential replacement. Scouts have been dispatched to track the 21-year-old, who arrived from Lyon last summer for £30.7 million. Gusto has impressed as Chelsea’s starting right-back during Reece James’ injury absence, even showcasing his adaptability by filling in at left-back.
Former Manchester United scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Liverpool could entice Gusto with the promise of consistent first-team opportunities, something Chelsea may struggle to guarantee once James returns. With six assists last season, Gusto, a France international, is seen as a promising long-term asset.
However, securing his services won’t be straightforward. Having signed a seven-year contract with Chelsea, Liverpool would likely need to offer a significantly higher sum than the £30.7 million Chelsea paid to acquire him.
