“Mike Dean’s ‘bizarre’ remark on Rasmus Hojlund’s penalty incident leaves Man Utd fans bewildered, as the Premier League issues an official statement”

Manchester United supporters believed they were denied a penalty in their match against Manchester City.

Mike Dean’s remark after the Rasmus Hojlund penalty incident left Manchester United fans puzzled, especially as the Premier League issued a statement amidst the controversy.

United supporters felt they should have been given a penalty when Ruben Dias mishandled Hojlund in the second half.

However, referee Anthony Taylor dismissed their appeals.

Shortly after the altercation between Hojlund and Dias, the Premier League released a statement on social media, confirming that the incident had been reviewed by VAR.

On X, the Premier League stated: “The referee’s decision of no penalty for the challenge between Højlund and Dias was checked and confirmed by VAR, which deemed it to be normal contact.”

During the Sky Sports commentary, Mike Dean backed referee Anthony Taylor’s decision to not award a penalty, rejecting Gary Neville’s claim that it was a foul.

“Not in a game like this, mate,” Dean said.

However, fans on social media were baffled by the former Premier League official’s comment and voiced their frustration over the decision.

One user on X wrote: “What does Mike Dean mean??? United can feel hard done by there, for me. Foot across Hojlund’s body, doesn’t touch the ball, and brings him down. Penalty.”

Another commented: “Sorry, but Mike Dean’s reasoning that Dias’ foul on Hojlund can’t be given ‘in a game like this’ – what does the size/nature of the game have to do with anything?”

A third added: “What, so the rules are different in some games? What a mess.”

A fourth user expressed their confusion, saying: “What the f**k does that mean??? That’s a clear foul and a penalty against Hojlund, ffs.”

A fifth user added: “That’s a penalty on Hojlund all day, what does Mike Dean mean when he says ‘not in a game like this’?”

Another user joked: “Hold on. Mike Dean just referred to a decision and said ‘it’s not enough in a game like this.’ So he’s openly saying they give decisions based on who is and isn’t playing?”
