“The Surprising Reason Andy Robertson’s Red Card vs. Fulham Only Earned Him a One-Match Ban”
“Why Andy Robertson’s Red Card Against Fulham Means Just a One-Match Ban Instead of Three”
The Scottish defender is set to miss a crucial match next week.
The surprising reason behind Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson’s one-match suspension following his red card has come to light.
Liverpool’s title pursuit under new manager Arne Slot faced a setback on Saturday as they were held to a dramatic 2-2 draw against Fulham at Anfield.
Robertson’s early dismissal left Liverpool with ten men, shifting the momentum and making the contest far more challenging for the home side.
However, unlike most players who receive straight red cards, the Scotsman will only face a one-match suspension thanks to a rarely known rule.
Robertson was shown a straight red card in the 17th minute after his foul on Harry Wilson was judged to have denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
Typically, a straight red card results in a three-match ban. However, this is not the case for Robertson, who will only serve a one-game suspension.
This is due to a Premier League rule stating that a three-match ban does not apply when a player is sent off for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
As a result, the left-back will only miss Liverpool’s League Cup quarter-final against Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium. Manager Arne Slot will also be absent from the touchline for that match, serving a suspension after accumulating three yellow cards.
Importantly, Robertson will be back in time for Liverpool’s highly anticipated trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next weekend.
Speaking about the incident that resulted in Robertson’s red card, Liverpool manager Arne Slot commended the defender for his resilience after taking a tough knock just moments before.
“I think what the team showed today, the character they displayed, that’s exactly what Robbo showed,” said the Dutchman.
“Sometimes, when you take a hit like that—two studs to the knee—it can hurt for a few minutes.”
“There’s nothing to blame him for; it showed real character that he wanted to continue after taking such a tough knock to his knee with two studs,” Slot said. “Unfortunately, it resulted in a red card, and it was a deserved one.”
