Jamie Carragher: Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Departure from Liverpool Would Garner Respect, Not Affection
Jamie Carragher thinks that Trent Alexander-Arnold would face more critical scrutiny from Liverpool supporters than players like Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, who may also depart as free agents next summer.
“Trent deserves to be loved no matter what, but if he leaves this summer, respect will outweigh affection,” Carragher said.
He emphasized the different treatment local players often receive compared to foreign ones. “With local lads, it always feels like: ‘You’re playing for Liverpool, what more do you want?’ I don’t think we’ll see a banner on the Kop anytime soon saying, ‘Give Trent whatever he wants.’”
Carragher also noted that if Alexander-Arnold were to leave on a free transfer, the criticism would likely be tougher. “Trent is valued at around £90 million, but if Salah or Van Dijk left on a free, fans would be more understanding, despite their transfer fees of £40 million and £75 million. Trent came for nothing, so he’d leave for the same price.”
The future of Alexander-Arnold’s contract appears more uncertain than that of Van Dijk or Salah. While reports indicate that Van Dijk has been offered a new deal and Salah is next in line, there have been no updates regarding negotiations with Alexander-Arnold.
