When the amber weather warning was issued across Merseyside on Friday afternoon, it seemed unthinkable that such a high-profile match would be called off. The statements released by both clubs on Friday evening reinforced the belief that the game would go ahead as planned.

However, as the night unfolded, worsening conditions made it clear that it would no longer be safe for supporters to travel across the city and beyond under these circumstances.
