Breaking News: Fitness Updates on Alisson Becker and Federico Chiesa
Alisson Becker is anticipated to make his return from injury by the end of December.
Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper has been sidelined since early October with a muscle issue, but Arne Slot confirmed this morning that he is recovering well.
The head coach also provided an update on Federico Chiesa, revealing that the winger has rejoined team training after his own period of recovery.
When asked at his pre-Newcastle United press conference if he would face a tough decision regarding the goalkeeper spot once Alisson is fit again, given Caoimhin Kelleher’s outstanding performances, Slot responded affirmatively.
“I feel like I always have tough decisions to make with every line-up,” Slot said.
“Take our last match against [Manchester] City, for example—Darwin [Nunez] didn’t play, nor did Curtis [Jones], Wataru [Endo], Harvey Elliott, or Jarell Quansah. And I probably forgot one or two, like Tyler Morton.
“It’s always challenging as Liverpool’s manager because we have so many talented players. However, I’ve been clear in the past few weeks about my stance on our goalkeepers.
“We’re just waiting for the moment when Alisson is fully fit because Caoimh has been performing excellently. It wouldn’t be right to put Alisson in goal if he’s only at 50 percent fitness—it wouldn’t be good for him or for the team.”
“He’s making progress. It might take a few more days, but he’s getting closer. As I’ve always said, the final phase of rehab is the trickiest—it’s when you start wondering, ‘Is he really ready, or does he need a bit more time?’
“But if everything continues as it is, he’ll be back in goal before the end of December.”
