Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili is poised to join Liverpool after the 2024/25 season, intensifying competition with Brazilian shot-stopper Alisson Becker.

Alisson Becker, 32, still considered one of the world’s elite goalkeepers, has faced injury setbacks in recent seasons, creating opportunities for backup Caoimhín Kelleher to shine. Kelleher notably saved a penalty from Kylian Mbappé during Liverpool’s 2-0 Champions League victory over Real Madrid, solidifying his reputation as a reliable alternative.

The arrival of Georgian international Giorgi Mamardashvili on July 1, 2025, under a pre-agreement finalized in August 2024, promises to heighten competition for the starting spot at Anfield. With Alisson, Kelleher, and Mamardashvili all vying for the role, the battle for Liverpool’s number one jersey will be fierce, leaving the futures of Alisson and Kelleher uncertain.

In a candid interview with Vozes do Gigante, Alisson reflected on his career and hinted at a potential return to his boyhood club, Internacional, after his Liverpool tenure. “I have a contract for three more years at Liverpool. The future is not definitive, but I’m open [to returning],” he stated, leaving the door ajar for a homecoming after his current deal, which runs until 2026 with an optional extension.

Despite attracting interest from Saudi Arabian clubs during the summer, Alisson opted to stay committed to his Liverpool career. However, the Brazilian goalkeeper is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury sustained in October.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has reiterated that Alisson remains the team’s first-choice goalkeeper when fit, but the 32-year-old is expected to miss the highly anticipated Premier League showdown against Manchester City.
