“Premier League Match Centre Reveals Why VAR Did Not Overturn Andy Robertson’s Foul on Tyler Dibling in Southampton vs Liverpool Clash”

The incident has generated a great deal of controversy.

The Premier League has issued a statement to clarify the VAR decision to award Southampton a contentious penalty in their match against Liverpool.

With just five minutes left in the first half at St Mary’s, Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk lost possession while attempting a back-heel. Shortly after, the impressive Tyler Dibling was fouled by Andy Robertson, and, much to the surprise of many, referee Samuel Barrott pointed to the penalty spot.

It was a close call, but after a thorough review, the on-field decision stood as VAR official Michael Oliver determined there was “no conclusive evidence” to suggest the contact took place outside the penalty area.

Following widespread debate among fans on social media, the Premier League Match Centre issued a statement.

It read: “The referee’s decision to award a penalty for the challenge by Robertson on Dibling was reviewed and upheld by VAR, who found no conclusive evidence that the contact occurred outside the penalty area.”

Here’s how fans on social media reacted to the incident:

One fan commented, “I’m sorry but that is not a penalty. IT’S OUTSIDE THE BOX,” while another argued, “It’s just inside, and Robertson’s foot was on the line when the foul happened.”

A third wrote, “We just watched Michael Oliver literally watch that player dive and dive outside the box and recommend a penalty. What a scam.”

A fourth fan said, “So, apparently, if you foul someone outside the box and you’re wearing a Liverpool jersey, that’s now a penalty,” and a fifth added, “How exactly is that a penalty against Liverpool? The tackle was outside the box, not inside.”

Southampton forward Adam Armstrong then equalized for Russell Martin’s side, converting the rebound from Caoimhin Kelleher’s initial save.
