“£71m Release Clause: Liverpool Target Chiesa’s Friend, Following Brother’s Summer Link to Reds”
“£71m Release Clause: Liverpool Eyeing Chiesa’s Friend, Whose Brother Was Previously Linked to Reds”
Reports from Italy suggest that Liverpool are still closely monitoring a player who has been on their radar long before Arne Slot succeeded Jurgen Klopp as manager.
While the Dutchman currently oversees what is arguably the strongest forward line in the Premier League—and among the best globally—Liverpool have recently been linked with a number of prolific strikers, including Omar Marmoush and Viktor Gyokeres. However, it seems these aren’t the only attackers on the radar at Anfield, as another familiar name has reportedly caught the attention of the club’s hierarchy.
“Liverpool Set Sights on Marcus Thuram”
On Tuesday morning, Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Liverpool are one of several clubs monitoring Inter Milan striker Marcus Thuram. The forward, who has long been a target of Klopp’s during his tenure at Anfield, remains highly regarded by the Reds.
The 27-year-old has a significant release clause of €85m (£71m) at Inter Milan, but despite being a childhood friend of Federico Chiesa—whose father, Enrico, played alongside Marcus’ dad, Lilian, at Parma—he has no plans to leave the Nerazzurri anytime soon.Interestingly, Liverpool were strongly linked with Marcus’ brother, Khephren, during the summer of 2023 when he was at Nice, before his move to Juventus.
“Does Liverpool Really Need Marcus Thuram?”
Although Thuram hasn’t been as remarkably prolific this season as Marmoush (14 goals in 16 games) or Gyokeres (23 in 18), he has still had a solid campaign with Inter, scoring eight goals in 15 appearances (Transfermarkt). The France international is a natural centre-forward, a position where Darwin Nunez has only found the net three times this season, and Diogo Jota has once again been plagued by injuries in recent weeks. This explains why Liverpool are reportedly keeping an eye on him.
That being said, Thuram falls more into the ‘nice to have’ category than a ‘must-have’ for Liverpool. Their two main strikers have both demonstrated their ability to lead the line effectively, and Luis Diaz is also capable of thriving in a central role if Slot opts to use him there. At present, it’s unlikely that the Anfield hierarchy will push aggressively to sign Thuram, though he remains a player to monitor in case circumstances change and the need to strengthen their attacking options arises.
